4Rs Phosphorus Trial

We all understand the importance of phosphorus fertilizer for a complete crop nutrition plan, but with so many phosphorus fertilizer options, which is the best for your farm?

The 4Rs Phosphorus Trial is a three-year multi-site study that investigates how management practices that encompass the 4R nutrient stewardship influence agronomic productivity and the environmental fate of applied nutrients in snowmelt run-off water. It evaluates the agronomic response of eight phosphorus fertilizer forms applied at a low and high rate (18 and 36 lbs P205 ac-1) and with two placement methods (in the seed-row and broadcast followed by incorporation immediately prior to seeding), along with an unfertilized control. In 2021, treatment response was evaluated on wheat and will be investigated on pea and canola in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

This project is a collaborative effort with Dr. Jeff Schoenau, chair in soil nutrient management with the Ministry of Agriculture Strategic Research Program, Foundation for Agronomic Research, Western Grains Research Foundation, Sask Wheat, Sask Canola and Saskatchewan Pulse Growers.
