SQUID JUICE: Results and Findings
‘Squid Juice’ is an all-natural hydrolysate made from squid by-product and enriched for agricultural purposes. Like fish hydrolysate, squid hydrolysate, is an excellent fertilizer, full of micronutrients, amino acids, and lipids. These natural molecules are known to promote soil microbial activity and plant health. Unlike other hydrolysates, our unique product offers something more: Chitin. Chitin is a naturally occurring molecule found in crustacean & insect exoskeletons and fungal cell walls. Recently, there has been intensive interest in chitins as potential, organic, pest suppressants, growth regulators, and nutritional products. The agricultural benefits of chitin are well documented. Scientific research studies have demonstrated that chitins promote plant defense, and suppress pathogenic fungi, nematodes, and other pests. Our product doesn’t just contain Chitin, but β-chitin, a rare, extremely bioactive form of chitin only found in Squid and other marine animals that are not commercially available.
In our Discovery Farms 2024 Research Trials we tested our Squid Juice product as a foliar spray in both soybean and corn. The Squid Juice product was tested in side-by-side treated and untreated plots. Outside of the Squid Juice product, all plots received the same standard fertilization and pest management regiments recommended for the crop and region. Foliar applications were made at a rate of three gallons per acre. Each plot was sprayed twice, once in the vegetative phase and once in the reproductive phase.
In soybean, yield increased in the plots that received Squid Juice treatments by an average of 2178 lb (36.3 bushels) an acre. In corn, yield increased by an average of 871 lb (15.5 bushels) an acre. Similar results have also been observed when the Squid Juice product was tested by third-party trial farms in both Canada and the United States.
