A recent surge in research projects at Glacier FarmMedia Discovery Farm Langham indicates that the pandemic hasn’t slowed the demand for critical field-scale research programs as western Canadian agriculture researchers prepare for another busy crop season.
“Field research remains an important focus for producers, the agriculture industry and researchers,” says Blake Weiseth, Discovery Farm Applied Research Lead and Agriculture Research Chair with Saskatchewan Polytechnic. “We’ve not only carried on through this challenging time, but have seen significant growth in the number of projects being conducted at Discovery Farm Langham.”
At a virtual gathering of Discovery Farm industry partners and researchers on April 16, Weiseth and the Discovery Farm team shared details around their 2021 research and demonstration projects, and their vision for the future. He noted that Discovery Farm Langham has experienced a significant jump in interest recently with more than 20 projects in 2021, doubling the number of projects in previous years.
“Researchers see the value that Discovery Farm can offer through our extensive industry connections, up-to-date smart field technology, and staff on site at this accessible location in Saskatchewan,” says Carla Vipond, Vice President at Glacier FarmMedia. “Another huge bonus is our ability to get what we learn into the hands of farmers and the community through webinars, field days, clinics, online communications and more.”
The April 16 virtual meeting celebrated a culture of collaboration and innovation with over forty attendees from key western Canadian research groups, industry partners, educational institutions and government organizations. Vipond notes that in the past, many synergies in research have come from different companies meeting at the Discovery Farm site, so they wanted to offer this virtual gathering for Discovery Farm partners to get together before the busy 2021 season.
Discovery Farm project details will be shared throughout the season. Producers will directly benefit from key research completed at Discovery Farm like strategic soil projects and research that uses precision agriculture technologies like SWAT maps and METOS Canada weather and soil sensors.
