Field Report shares potential solutions for soybean and dairy producers

MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release: February 23, 2023

WOODSTOCK, Ont. – Staff at Discovery Farm Woodstock are working alongside industry partners to investigate some compelling new products that can help Ontario farmers meet the challenges and opportunities in agriculture production in the coming years.

The 2022 Discovery Farm Woodstock Field Report features three demonstration research projects plus several special events like industry training, meetings and knowledge sharing initiatives that bring new learning to light in eastern Canadian agriculture.

“It’s great to see these products being tested in real Ontario farming conditions in the crop and dairy areas,” says Brayden Bell, Field Manager for Discovery Farm Woodstock. “With Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show being back in person in September 2022, we also saw how much farmers enjoyed checking out the field demonstrations with new products and equipment.”

Bell notes that the projects at Discovery Farm Woodstock build on industry partnerships and provide critical innovations that offer new options for farmers. Three key 2022 demonstration research projects include:

  • Field of Excellence: In collaboration with Hechenbichler, the Austrian-based company, the
AMALGEROL Essence trial was a Canadian debut for Hechenbichler. This new in-season biostimulant helps promote root growth and neutralize harmful molecules in plants.
  • 100-Bushel Soybean: What’s Really Holding Us Back? Matthew Rundle, University of Guelph graduate student, is conducting research that analyzes crop growth rates, node count per plant, pods per plant, seeds per pod and seed weight to determine the contributing factors behind high-yield potential soybeans.
  • Grober Young Animal Development Centre (GYADC): located on the Discovery Farm Woodstock site since 2009, the research trial in 2022 evaluated how the addition of an oregano product
(DOSTO® Oregano) impacts performance, feed intake and health of Holstein bull calves.

Discovery Farm Woodstock is also home to crop plots from 15 eastern Canadian companies with a wide variety of seed and input products, allowing farmers to explore many crop options in one place. Tours occurred during the growing season and at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show on September 13-15, 2022.

“We are excited to present the first Woodstock Field Report to share the great work our partners are doing at the farm,” says Carla Vipond, executive vice-president of Discovery Farm. “We see these type of initiatives growing year-over-year, with lots of great learning to come for farmers.”
